Moving Goats
Note: New regulations April 2008 regarding movement of animals from Minnesota and Michigan:

Unless they go directly to slaughter or an approved feedlot, Minnesota and Michigan cattle, bison and goats brought into Wisconsin will need:

-An import permit from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection

-Negative TB test results from a “whole-herd test” in the past 12 months

-Negative tests for individual animals in the past 60 days if the whole-herd test was done before that time, or if they were not part of the herd at the time of the test

-In addition, they will be quarantined when they arrive in Wisconsin, and will have to be retested 60-90 days after import.

-There will be no exemptions for young animals.  Animals brought into Wisconsin for fairs and shows will not be quarantined, but must return to their farm of origin; they cannot be sold.

Percent

To figure percent, move the decimal point two places to the left and multiply by that number.

 

Example: Your buck should be fed supplement at 0.25% of his body weight (200 lb) per day.  

Take 0.25 % and move the decimal two places to the left.  Now it is 0.0025.  

Multiply that times 200 lb.  0.0025 x 200 = 0.5 or half a pound.  

You should feed half a pound of supplement every day.  

 

pH scale, measuring acidity (acid) or alkalinity (base)

1 is the strongest acid.  6 is the weakest acid.

14 is the strongest base.  8 is the weakest base.

A one number change means the solution is ten times weaker or stronger than the previous measure.

Acid: a compound with a positive or negative charge, that breaks apart in water to form a hydrogen ion (H+).  The more H+ the stronger the acid.  Solutions containing acids are called “acidic” solutions.  Acids are sour, react strongly with metals, are very dangerous and can burn your skin. Examples of acids: vinegar, citrus fruits, stomach acid

Base: a compound with a positive or negative charge, that breaks apart in water to form hydroxide ions (OH-). 
The greater the concentration of OH- ions the stronger the base.  Solutions containing bases are called “alkaline” solutions.  Bases taste bitter, are slippery, are very dangerous and can burn your skin.  Examples of bases: lye, ammonia.

An easy way to remember this is that acid begins with A, base begins with B.  A is before B in the alphabet and the acid-base scale is in the same order as the alphabet, so the lower the numbers are acidic and the higher numbers are basic.  7 is neutral.

Wisconsin Leads Nation in Milk Goats in 2007 

"A study released this month by the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, reports that Wisconsin is growing its dairy goat industry faster than any other state. With 33,000 milk goats, Wisconsin has the most milk goats in the nation; California and Texas are tied for second place with 30,000 milk goats each. Nationwide,  numbers total 296,000 head, a 2 percent increase compared to last year"
