-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The "Goats In The Classroom" Project

Goats in The Classroom was a project that our family started in 2004, where we educated children in the surrounding communities about goats, commercial milk production, goat milk products, and the life of a farmer.  We no longer farm, so the project is over, but I thought other people want to do this.

In the spring and fall, we visited local schools with 1-2 month old goats from our commercial dairy, and we also hosted field trips.  Here's some information about how we managed the project:

I advertised the program by passing out business cards, and sometimes mailing letters to the classrooms. (Click here to see the Letter to teachers)   They mailed back the form if they were interested.  Teachers who had our visits in the past, called and scheduled automatically each year..

We gave the teacher the website address for this page of the Goat Dairy Library before the date of our visit, so that he or she could incorporate information about goats into the curriculum and prepare the children for the visit..

At the school, we met the children, parents and teachers on the lawn outside the school.  We went over our rules for handling the goats, we talked about farming, how to take care of a goat, how goats are milked, how much we use math and reading in our daily work, etc.  Then we unloaded the goats from the truck, and let the children visit with them.  (Note: Do not hold this next to a parking lot or you will attract more children and parents than you can handle!)

We also hosted on-farm tours.  We showed the children the milking area, let a couple goats enter the room, get up on the stand and we showed them how we milked with the pipeline.  They visited the chickens and other animals on the farm, as well as the goats.. The children fed the goats.  We spread them out along the fence line and each one feed only one goat.  (See the photo.)  Really keep an eye on the children, because some will keep running back to the feed tub to get more feed, so the dominant goats were being fed way too much feed. (Make sure the teachers understand ahead of this activity, that the goats can get very sick if they are overfed.)

Whether at the school or at the farm, we photographed the children and the goats, and then transferred the photos to a disc, which was given to the teacher to use for making craft projects, decorating bulletin boards, or for sending pictures home with the children.

We strictly limited the number of visits/tours to one a week so we didn't get overwhelmed.  This was especially difficult when we took the goats to the school.  It is hard work to load the goats, take them to school, take care of the goats and children, then take the goats home and unload them.  It is also tiring for the goats, so we take a different set of goats each time.

Remember to have a bathroom available for kids, and make sure a teacher accompanies the child to the bathroom.

We also put out paper cups and a very large jug of water, as the children get thirsty.
